At Class

Today we will show you what American high school class is like. Mrs. Andrea, one of our host mother, is kind enough to invite us to her class. She is a teacher. She teaches English to international students. At her class, she is in charge of top level 16 Chinese students. Some students have bright color hair, like green or gold. But I noticed soon they were eager to learn English. I realize they really want to enter a university in the U.S.

At the beginning of her class, a student was given 15 seconds to make a speech after a theme was given to him. He had to insist on what he would want to say for 45 seconds in public. After the other students listened to what he would say, they evaluated his speech. I was impressed a lot. I realized, in Japan, we fell short of this aspect of English education.

Today’s her lesson’s last topic is how to write an essay. Essay plays an important part of entrance exams. Andrea used " an Analytical Essay Graphic Organizer ", which is a kind of framework like this: Introduction paragraph, Body paragraph 1,2,3, and Conclusion paragraph. Each section has its own clue. Taking as an example, “Introduction part”. It is divided into three parts; like Hook, Introduce the work of literature, Thesis. Using this organizer, students write an outline of their own essay. Andrea checks their organizers and advises them how to rewrite or gives another aspect. After that, they brush up their own essay. Andrea said, “Every paragraph needs “TREAT”, Topic sentence, Reason, Evidence, Analysis, Transition sentence.”  Her lesson is great. It’s useful. I hope in the future, our students will come again to take her lesson.
